The days are getting brighter and the nights are getting longer but there’s still a couple of months to go before the temperature starts warming up. Below we’ve listed a few foods that will help strengthen your immune system and fight the final waves of winter colds, making sure you stay fighting fit until the warmer weather returns.

  1. Garlic - Garlic acts as a natural antibiotic. Allicin – garlic’s main compound - contains antiviral, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties that work to fight and prevent infection, by blocking the enzymes that lead to such conditions. Not only that, but garlic is bursting with vitamins A, B and C which have healing effects on the circulatory, immunological and digestive system.

  2. Ginger and Turmeric - Ginger is made up of natural compounds called Gingerols, which contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric is high in antioxidants and also considered a natural anti-inflammatory. Mounting studies have shown that curcumin, a compound of turmeric, inhibits macrophages from producing cytokine proteins that cause inflammation. Try adding our Ginger or Turmeric shot to your menu for an extra strong dose of each.

  1. Sweet Potato - Sweet potato is packed full of beta-carotenes - important in the growth and defence of immune cells, as they help to fight and prevent the effects of colds or flu. Sweet potato is also a great source of vitamin A, which the body needs to build white blood cells and fight off infection.

  2. Dark Leafy Greens - These are a great source of cold-fighting Vitamin C and when cooked reduce considerably in size, which means you can jam-pack your meals with these nutrient-dense, delicious veggies. Whilst we know that they are full of vitamins and minerals, recent studies have shown that chemicals found primarily in green veg contribute to the regulation of IEL cells, a fundamental component of healthy immune function. Think spinach, kale, broccoli and swiss chard! Juices can be a quick and easy way to pack in the essential vitamins and minerals, try adding one of our cold pressed green juices to your plan for that extra hit!

  1. Probiotic yoghurt - 80% of the immune system resides in your gut. Yoghurt contains probiotics which help build up the good bacteria in your gut, reducing the body’s inflammatory responses, and preventing the build-up of bad bacteria which can cause illness or infection.

Staying healthy throughout the winter can be a challenge, but making small changes to your diet, getting plenty of sleep and keeping warm, means we can all make it through unscathed!
